(*Dear Master P, in case you're reading this sometime in the future: I can only assume that you're bilingual in Sarcasm and Hyperbole given your genetics, but just in case - I wouldn't trade you, deathhellfussy newborn days included, for all the Birkin bags in the world. Well, probably not. We'll revisit this when you hit adolescence. xoxo)
Here's what I got instead: five gazillion heavy blankets for Master P (who was born in Texas in June, mind you) and lots of simpering advice about how I should "sleep when the baby sleeps", a phrase guaranteed to incite rage in mothers of non-sleeping, non-put-downable (I hereby waive my Pretty wand and deem "not-put-downable" a word) newborns everywhere.
While I was so very grateful for the baby gifts and dinners that poured in, a few non-food presents particularly stood out as thoughtful indulgences for me. They weren't at all expensive or fancy, but they were things I loved and needed but might not have splurged on otherwise - and, unlike another newborn-sized onesie, was something for me, a nice acknowledgment that I too was going through that special yet especially terrifying time. Not that having a baby is at all about MEMEMEME, but you smell what I'm cooking here (or ordering for takeout, more likely).
(Mildly Important Sidebar: Yes, I see the irony in posting about stuff during the time in which I've renounced shopping for stuff. Alas, my inconsiderate friends have not put their Major Life Events like pregnancies and weddings on hold during this trying time - how dare they! - so I'm making a few gift-giving exceptions. I hope to get to the spiritual epiphany portion of the program soon. Stay tuned for further justifications.)
Here's the best of what's around - think personalized indulgences & pampering for poor, exhausted mama, who needs a Pretty pick-me-up. She wants to remain stylish despite the fact that she has no time or energy to devote to it (or to a shower). She's spending her day in pajamas playing a high-stakes game on no sleep with no rule book. She'd like something she can read one-handed while feeding baby during those loooong middle of the night sessions. Um, not that these memories are still smoldering afresh in my recent, bitter memory. Ahem:

I looove my Holly GoLightly sleep mask! Screams "capable of diva moments" just enough to where people leave me good enough alone on the airplane. I am bookmarking this for my fertile friends!
Very cute post! Any ideas for a bride? You mentioned friends with weddings soon too. I'll be getting them a proper wedding present but would love to send a little something to the bride herself, similar in thought to these ideas just for the new mom. Thanks in advance!
We received a few Target gift cards which I used for new nursing shirts for me. SYT had everything he needed and this momma needed something supportive besides dumb advice!! Plus it gave me a reason to get out of the house, which is always nice!!
New mothers are *so* deserving, I love seeing gift ideas for them, they deserve (and need) to be pampered.
Sending you a smile Miss Pretty!

Spaghetti, wine, and chocolate chip cookies will always be #1 in my postpartum heart. But non-food related, I would have enjoyed an iTunes gift card for new music to listen to, or even a bright colored cardigan from Tarjay to throw over my nursing tanks.
Great ideas! I'll be sending some of these to some of the new smug mommys in my life :)
In home foot massage:).
I love the idea of giving new nursing pajamas. I spent the first few weeks of N's life sitting on the couch in various stages of undress while he nursed NON-STOP. I think a cute new pair of pjs might have made me feel a little better about not having showered in what felt like days.
It wasn't until baby #2 that I received a gift for me (or I just don't remember any from my omg I have a baby fog after #1.) A sweet friend gave me some tea, a mug and a journal, a DVD for BB and she brought Chick Fil A lunch for us to have together at my house and time to just talk. It was the best and every time I use that mug I think of her.
ooh perfect timing on this post. I'm not sure what to get my sister but time is ticking. I think she would love some cute nursing PJs. Thanks for the idea!
My very sweet friends told me to go to the Anthropologie website and pick out a necklace, which they so kindly had delivered to my door the next week.
My mother also took me shopping (a genius ploy to make me get out and about with baby) when Jack was 3 weeks old to pick out a very fabulous pair of new shoes that would motivate me to gussy myself up again. I felt like I found "me" again when I saw myself in the mirror in 4 inch wedges with a stroller parked right beside. (From the knees down, of course.)
Since then, I've tried to consider the mommy too. I am actually about to check in with one friend to see if she trusts dad enough to steal away for a pedi with me on Saturday afternoon. I will be going, with or without her!
