The Smug Marrieds Jet-Set: Anniversary Trip to...

I know what you've been thinking.

You've been wild with anxiety, thinking, "OMG I cannot believe that Pretty left to wonder about where she & the Anonymous Husband are jet-setting off to for their fifth Smug Married anniversary. I mean, how are we to enjoy a long holiday weekend with such unbearable suspense?"

I apologize for causing you this unbearable agony and announce, without further travel planning procrastination ado, that the Pretties are headed this November for a long weekend in...

We went with majority reader opinion and, based largely on your terribly helpful advice, excitedly booked our trip to Charleston. We've sorted out our Historic District-based hotel, but I would very much appreciate any restaurant, shopping (of course), and sightseeing recommendations, either in the comments here or at my highly top secret email at ipickpretty AT gmail etc.

Again, my sincerest apologies for keeping you in such agonies. The staff - wherever they are - has been duly informed that such unkindness will not be tolerated.

Charleston restaurant/ shopping /sightseeing recommendations?

PS - You know how I love a PS - many thanks to my Twitterati who gave me such helpful advice on buying a proper DSLR camera. We - as in, the Royal We - are trying to de-ghetto-fy the photography quality here, and the near unanimous consensus was to start with this Canon. I'm bargain hunting now & hoping to have one - and staff to train me on how to use it - secured by the time lovely Charleston rolls around ....

We have that Canon and we got a wonderful deal on it at Costco - it came with two lenses, a bag (which is hideous) and some other things that you apparently need to take a good photo. I have no idea. It does not come with someone to tell you how to use it. Disappointing.

I am originally from Charleston! For delicious french food, La Fourchette on King street is cozy and small, Rue de Jean on John Street is delicious as well and a little more lively. Cypress is delicious for dinner as is 82 Queen (sit outside in the open patio!), High Cotton on Friday nights have a live jazz band and is one of the best restaurants in the city (a must is the Charleston cocktail). Drinks at Rooftop at Vendue (usually with a fun live band). Husk has been voted one of the best new restaurants and is delicious. Social wine bar has a great appetizer menu and wines as well. Charleston Grill inside the Charleston Place hotel is delicious for dinner!
Basil has great Thai food and OKU has an amazing happy hour MWF and delicious sushi and fun drinks.
Hall Chop house has amazing brunch and the best burger in town, also has the best steaks as well.
Please for all that is holy, do not give in and go to Bubba Gumps or Hymans. They are disgusting over priced tourists traps with no local culture! It would be much better to go to Jestines Kitchen or Virginias on King Street to get your southern food fix and enjoy fresh caught and sustainable seafood at any of the above mentioned dinner and lunch places!
To dress a gentleman you need to head to Dumas on King Street. Very Charleston!

You can't go wrong with the food in Charleston! Everyone loves Magnolias - we went there and it was good, but not my fave. We ate lunch at Justine's Kitchen - if you want real southern food - it is the best! Peninsula Grill is amazing! High Cotten is great (I like it better than Magnolias). For sightseeing - I recently read they renovated the open market and it's supposed to be great. That's in the historic district. Make sure you get a ride down by the water at night in a rickshaw, and grab a praline down by the market as well. Cute shops in Charleston Place, as well as up and down King Street. We even opted to go to a movie one afternoon while we were there last and it's just a quick drive over the Cooper River bridge to a theater that serves you food and beer while you watch. We also took a carriage tour last year as well - and learned some neat facts about Charleston. Oh and the ghost tours - we've done those too! Cheesy and touristy, yes - but fun!

SO many good places to eat there but I'll select a few of my favorites.  In no particular order - Husk, McCrady's, The Glass Onion, Charleston Cafe (for breakfast), Three Little Birds (breakfast), and Sugar Bakeshop.  I did reviews of most of these on my blog, if you're interested.  Have fun!!

I have been to Charleston twice in the past year, and you have GOT to go to the Gin Joint for drinks.  It is like an old speakeasy and they only have liquors and mixers that were available pre-prohibition.  The drinks are awesome!!! http://theginjoint.com/

i used to work at a historic downtown hotel, i'm interested in where you may be staying. :) for food, i'd suggest FIG and McCrady's for some of the best food in town, the Blind Tiger on Broad Street is my favorite bar, and Pearlz has the best oysters!
