Choose Your Own (My Own) Adventure: The Smug Marrieds Celebrate

This November will mark five years of connubial bliss for the Anonymous Husband and me, which not only makes us experts on the subject of matrimony, but also entitles us to jet-set off for a Big Damn Anniversary Trip someplace exotic. Obviously.

(Or, you know, a long weekend getaway somewhere a short flight away & not too terribly expensive, as made possible by the kind assistance of the Anonymous Mother-In-Law babysitter.)

Either way, we're headed South of the Mason-Dixon for a celebration weekend, and here's where I'm hoping you, darling readers - all three of you - might be willing to lend a Pretty hand. We're trying to choose from three excellent choices, and if any of you belles could give us travel advice, preferences, etc. narrowing down the following field, I'd be ever so grateful:

Charleston...

Savannah...

New Orleans . . .

Any advice - aside from "Get a life, overprivileged whinypants!" because, believe me, I've tried - be it hotel, restaurant, or must see attractions, would be lovely. Also, are there any problems with / advantages to visiting one of these cities given the time of year? I'm partial to options #1 and #2 given that neither the AH nor I have been to either, but of course New Orleans seems a good a place as any to show off our Smug Marriedness.

One, two, three - jet set, and thank you in advance! Exclamation point!!

ooooh....all good choices! i feel like you can't really appreciate savannah until you've been to charleston, but it depends on what vibe you're looking for. savannah is a little sleepier and less hip/touristy, but it's wonderfully relaxing. charleston has more in the way of nightlife and lots of things to do for entertainment during the day, but it's also once of the best dining destination in the u.s. can't wait to hear what you pick!

too funny--we are contemplating the very same! Its our 8th year anniversary in October and for the first time in five years no one is attached to my boobs, so we are hightailing it out of town for a weekend. We have been to Savannah, which I LOVED. Its such a gorgeous town, with excellent food. (Food is very important to me on vacation.) I have yet to go to Charleston or Nawlins, so no opinions there. If you do go to Savannah, check out Tybee Island for a quick daytrip, and eat lunch at...arg, can't think of the name, something obvious like the crab shack...its some rustic roadside restaurant built onto a deck over a tideland bay, serves lobster boil, basically, with holes in the table to drop the shells through. I want to go back for that meal alone.

I would narrow it immediately to Savannah and New Orleans. Strictly per my opinion.

We honeymooned in Savannah and it was a totally charming experience. The food is phenomenal. So is the atmosphere. However, there were times I wished we had chosen NO instead, due to NO's comparative liveliness. The great thing about NO is that you can have romantic and you can have lively. Savannah is mostly just romantic. So I guess what I'm saying is, if it were me, I'd be packin' for New Orleans. Tennessee Williams paperbacks in tow.

PS: If you DO end up in NO, I know a beyond fabulous tour guide....

Oh goodness. They are all wonderful. But, being a South Carolina native I would have to say Charleston. We go to Charleston all the time, and just went to Savannah recently...while Savannah is wonderful, beautiful, and historic...in my opinion it still doesn't hold a candle to Charleston. Especially with shopping/dining. November is perfect in Charleston (generally). Cool but not too cold. I could go on and on, so if you want more advice/suggestions just e-mail me. I think y'all should definitely go somewhere you've never been before though. The beauty, history, shopping, dining, plantations, tours, beaches, nightlife are all superb in Charleston. There are so many options! cpr930@hotmail.com

Yes, we love Charleston and have been there four about four of our nine anniversaries! We love it that much! We went last September and although it's hot, it's great. November would be wonderful. If you stay downtown on the main strip, you can walk to all of these glorious places to eat and shop and take fun tours in horse-drawn carriages and such! You should look at staying at the Charleston Place hotel - it's the best and very nicely located. They have a spa and wonderful shops! Let me know if you want more information - will be glad to share my tips!

Shucks, my vote would have to be for Charleston. Husband and I have never been but have always talked about it being one of THE few places in the United States that we would still really love to see. I've also heard fabu things about Savannah, but after seeing pictures of a girlfriend's recent Anni Trip to CLT, I'm a huge fan. Do it :)

I've never been further south than Missouri, and while the Show Me State does hold it's various charms, I'm not sure it qualifies me for helping you make this very important decision. Regardless, I'm going to say New Orleans. Then I'm going to say you should just send me to scope out things and set an itinerary.

Charleston over Savannah, all the way. But 'naw leans is a whole different kettle of fish, isn't it? jazz and booze and partying, vs. southern heritage and architecture and sleepy charm. x

Start with NO. First, it's closer which for a short vacation is important. It's also a great walking around town, with no need to rent a car. Trolly or inexpensive cabs cover everything else.

Then Charleston. The city is everything you imagined then some.

Savannah is glorious. Part of its beauty is that you simply can't get there easily from anywhere.

Charleston or NOLA. Our #5 is coming up this fall and we're going to...Austin. Hrmph.

How old was Master P the first time you left him for a weekend trip more than a couple hours drive away? I'm scared of having to get an emergency flight back home in the middle of the night.

So I've never been to New Orleans so I can't say anything about there, but I LOVE Charleston and Savannah so either is a great choice.

Charleston does have a bit more of the upscale shopping and more of the nightlife than Savannah. If you're wanting to do shopping, go there. Savannah (aka HOME) is a bit sleepier, bit more romantic in my opinion. It's more laid back. Both have excellent historical tours and plenty to do during the day. Savannah has the better beach with Tybee (and you must eat at the Crab Shack!). Both places have AMAZING food (if you go to Savannah, save yourself the time of Lady and Sons-just say no!). Email me if you want hotel recs and such. I could go on for days...

We just got back from our first ever trip to Savannah & I fell in love with the city. So amazing & so much to do! We stayed at the Avia Hotel downtown and found a really good rate online. It was within walking distance of everything - bars, shopping, restaurants, Forsyth Park. The downtown is really cute, lots of delicious restaurants, and you can go to a rooftop bar on the river too. Tybee Island is a short drive for a great beach. It was a perfect Mommy/Daddy getaway!
