The Handbag's Lament

(Subtitle: "Oh, good - she's being frivolous again!")

Oh, Muse - there you are /
Winking at me from afar /
Price beyond mortgage

(Photo credit: Saks. Haiku credit: me, unfortunately)

Once upon a handbag, many months ago, a certain lady of royal delusions discerning tastes spotted a certain YSL purse from across her computer screen. It was love at first ladylike handle.

I she saw, she schemed, she saved, until one blissful retail day she spotted the Muse (so perfectly named!) at her favorite store, in the desired neutral, fall-appropriate color. The Heavenly trumpets sounded, her AmEx began its anticipatory dance in her wallet, and all was right with the world until . . .

. . . the auto insurance bill arrived. And the mortgage one. Oh, and then she remembered the upcoming student loan payment.

This handbag hussy of five years ago? Would have found a way to the purse & the loan payments. By extended payments or some other voodoo magic, I would have pondered, plotted, and jammed all of the above into my budget - if not my savings account (foreshadowing!).

This handbag hussy now? (Begrudgingly) prefers to comfortably pay my bills. And have a savings account. And give money to, you know, other worthy causes. And lo, this accessories affair shall continue from afar for now.* I may be getting older, but some of that wisdom my family taught me just might be sinking in. If only the handbag crushes would stop nearly sinking me . . .

*PC Police Disclaimer: Yes, yes - the so-called "sacrifice" of a handbag is at best a silly sort of problem to be moaning about, particularly when people are struggling merely to pay their bills. I acknowledge that I'm blessed and lucky. Please just take this with the grain of (bad) haiku with which it is intended.

so funny... I know exactly how that feels.. went to buy a (on sale even) DVF dress the other day from neimans online and realized I should pay rent, con-ed, amex and other various bills before I indulge in red heaven.... :) looking forward to your email later! xxxoo

I dream about shoes in a similar fashion. If you dream hard enough...well my head just hurts.

oooh I go through phases where I am the adult and spend sparingly and save and donate and pay the bills early, and then once in a while I go all splurgtastic and buy whatever lovely item I have been coveting...

Good for you for passing this one, and when the time comes for the next one, maybe, just maybe you can meander into the idea that you deserve it for being so good!

I had to give up my handbag obsession 3 years ago when I decided to give up the career for kids. It was the right choice, but I still dream...

Oh Pretty! Just get the bag. That's what I would do. Of course, that's why I am always in trouble with my husband and have been put on shopping suspension for the time being. I mean that bag is a devine addition to your heirloom colection. Or maybe totally don't listen to me at all. :)

That is the perfect luscious shade of golden-brown/tan. I can see why you'd be tempted! I do find that sometimes if I wait long enough, then there will be a new bag to catch my eye. It's like a game. ;-)

Now you are really onto something Miss Pretty, "Handbag Haiku, Only Available on the Pretty Planet," what do you think? (Can you imagine...especially if we all tried to compose one?? Oh. My. Stars.)

Hope you have a delightful Thursday,

I was feeling sorry for myself (doc review, and nightmare client incessantly calling), and perusing Milly dresses online. Then read your post, reminded myself to be a grownup, and clicked Saks closed. My bank account thanks you!!

Last night I heard some crap on the radio that if you think about something hard enough, you will get it. I am trying this approach on a new Birkin.

*fingers crossed*

It's always fun to look. Yes, most of us have high class problems. This would be one of them. But, you are not alone in your pain.

It sucks when you realize you're growing up huh?!? Damn responsibility... =)

So here is my dilemma...I spend money on cheal bags, thinking they'll give me the variety I need - but I end up hating them. I feel if I had one good bad (like my Burberry bag), I would use it all the time and not get sick of it. That's a reason to spend a lot of money on a bag, isn't it? But my husband would NEVER understand 4 figures for a purse. I'd have to hide it!

OMG - my word verification is "pauper" - I swear!

Oh dear. I feel your pain. Went shopping with teen twins and got a little teary when passing Louis Vuitton and saw the new bags in the window. It is tough some seasons.

Is it bad that bills don't cross my mind when I'm shopping? Maybe I should take a cue from you and Husby would be less unhappy with me when I come home, bags in tow...

Ahhh...the pain of lighter bank account is far worse than the gorgeous heft of a designer bag, I'm afraid.

Ugh. Being responsible is so annoying.
