Prettier Than Everyone Else: The Bandage Dress

For someone who occasionally* writes about style, I confess to avoiding coverage of those trends skinny jeans skinny jeans skinny jeans which don't flatter (pear-shaped) me personally.  As in, those fashions that cause me to inwardly scream, "MY HIPS!  MY HIPS!  JUST THINK OF MY CHILD-BEARING (SOMEDAY) HIPS IN THOSE!!! MAGELLAN HIPS, BECAUSE THEY COULD CIRCUMNAVIGATE THE GLOBE WITH THEIR HUGENESS IN THOSE! GAH!"
*Or constantly; forgive me, non-shoppers, but it has been Avarice-R-Us here lately due to real life getting odious for a few loved ones.  When my inner writing muse gets stressed, she wants to go shopping.

Ahem.  Given my figure bias, as well as my questioning of this 80s revival that is still going strong in 2009, I had overlooked the return of the curve-hugging Herve Leger "bandage dress" for a time. I did initially because I saw the phrase "bandage dress" and thought, "I've somehow stumbled upon a fetish-y Band-Aid site".  On second glance, however, it's because this look leaves no room for error:

For you hourglass-figured types, be you on the Kate Bosworth or the Kate Winslet end of curvy, this likely looks amazing on you;  as for me, my hips and I will be cowering in the corner, thinking of the many pairs o' Spanx we'd need to fit into this - or so I thought, until I happened upon a few more figure and budget friendly finds:

(Credit:  Macy's)

"London Times Sleeveless Shutter-Pleat Dress" ($109.00):  This skirt flares out a bit in a more forgiving manner, and the ruched bustline adds curves up top.  For those of us like me, even though I'm the spitting image of HRH Grace who need it, that is.

"Jones New York Cap-Sleeved Tiered Laser-Cut Dress" ($170.00):  In addition to having too many adjectives, this one comes with a nice cap sleeve for those who prefer a sleeve & bra strap coverage.

(Credit:  BCBG)

"Tiered Halter Dress" (on sale at $138):  This is close to the "no margin for error" original, but at a friendlier price and more forgiving skirt.  If your shoulders are in shape, this is a beautiful halter top to show them off in.

As far as accessorizing this dress style - or making it modest enough for the more conservative, boring laywer types (me!) amongst us - I like the way the following two famous types interpreted this look:

This may be the one & only time we besmirch the Pretty with one of those Vicky's Secret model types, but bear with me.  She gets the accessories just right here: (1) the 80s blazer is both of the moment & covers up enough for my prudish tastes; (2) the satchel bag gives it textural & colorful interest; (3) the simple hair and makeup keep it modest; (4) patent nude heels - leg-elongating and fab; and (5) the arm-charm, "Better than a Birkin" Bloom boyfriend.

Yes, I'm going there - our Lady of the Fictional Upper East Side, Blair Waldorf, expertly sets off her version of the bandage with a neutral, conservative cardigan.  Note the sequin detail on the arm & neckline that keeps this young & interesting.

Will you be giving this ongoing trend a go?  Or do you think it's best left to the imaginary prep school brats?

Edited to Add:  I keep finding more demure takes on this trend, like here and here.  If you aren't afraid of the sleeveless or form-fitting, there are multiple ways to adapt this look.

I wore a black Tadashi one in a wedding recently and I think it turned out lovely. Of course people could have been making fun of my italian hips behind my back. Who knows. Ah ha.

These dresses are all gorgeous! I especially love the soft pink one matched with a cream blazer :)

I haven't worn a skirt or dress in years because everything makes my hips look ginormous!!!

I will probably NOT be giving this a go. I just think it's a bit clingy. But, I do like the BW one at the bottom of the post - I think it's something to do with the contrasting black and white...

Despite the 30 minutes on the treadmill just now, I still don't think my hips are up to par either. (Also love the better-than-the Birkin reference. Fantastic.)

I think I will just sit back and admire Blair's version. I am not bold enough. No way.

You know Miss Pretty, those last several dresses you found at Macy's and the BCBG are really nice! Although that whole form-fitting, skin-tight is never going to happen here at the Prepatorium, it's just not for us.

And we can overlook an occasional foray into this arena, don't you think? It doesn't taint the Pretty Planet, not at all. It only adds to your glamour-factor.

I'm an hour glass shape, and I've tried on dozens of these dresses to no avail! I just feel too exposed in the style. i like the other options, but I still need more cloth around the bust! LOL.

I will not be trying one of these myself but I have heard they are very flattering...so maybe I should!?

I bought one of these dresses at Macy's by INC, and it is okay.

I have the opposite problem. Read: NO figure. It was purchased in my ever failing attempt to create the illusion of hips.

It kind of works. However, they are most definitely better made for someone whose waist and hips have more than a five inch difference.

I have a black Adriana Papell that I am obsessed with. I am pretty curvy with a large chest, smaller waist, and hips and it is the most flattering dress I've ever worn. The bandage effects keep it from looking like it is clinging anywhere. I think it depends on your body type but I'm loving it and hoping to snatch up another!

My hips scream - I am woman, hear me roar - and in a tight anything, whether it be bandaged or a mini, that scream can be heard through the jungle.

Yes, those horizontal lines scare me a bit. On another note, the resurgence of shoulder pads is in full force. That is another trend I will not be following.

I need to go buy a closet of these. I've got an hourglass figure so I'm either busting out on top or totally hippy.

Oh, to live in the 50s or on the Mad Men set, where my figure would be worshipped...

I have a major crush on bandage dresses. So does my guy. We've stood together in front of Herve Leger creations at stores, staring at them with our jaws dropped. Kind of a fan. Not, however, such a fan of the pricepoint.

There are numerous BCBG copies (same parent company), but what the less costly BCBG versions get wrong is the length - they turn something stunningly sexy into something stunningly slutty, because they're too short.

Honestly - hips or no hips - the best thing to pair with this dress is attitude. It takes you 9/10 of the way.

oh i would love to have one. and i am dying to try one on. i keep telling myself next trip to nyc i am going to act like i have 1500 to drop on a slutty dress! a girl wore one (the real thing not a knockoff) to her engagement party in sc, and it caused quite the scandal because woman thought it was so tight!

Love the dress from Macy's. I think even I could pull that one off. The strict bandage dress would not work for anyone with even small amounts of cottage cheese on the backs of her thighs, 14 year old boys and Brazilian super models exempt.

These dresses make me look like I'm trying to be older than what I am :( ha ha oh well, I don't think they look that great on me either way!

Me too ... Hips too big. And they give me a faux fupa... gah!

I am not really a fan of this look but I will say it looks better with a cardigan or something over it. I love Blair's dress!

I love this on Blair but think I could only pull this off if I am playing J-Lo for Halloween as my derriere would not be favorably presented in this lovely style.

I'm a big fan of this look. I have been trying to find it a bit more cost effectively and you have helped me a lot! Thanks. (will send a pic if I get one AND have a place to wear it to)

i think this dress is great and works for any age. i've seen mothers of the bride wear it and i've seen 21 year olds wearing it at a wedding. beautiful!

These dresses are gorgeous, but do not think they would suit my figure either!

If you get the chance, stop by my blog, you've been tagged!

I love the other options that you found! I liked the idea of the bandage dress, but I get a bit freaked out by anything too form fitting...I think it can definitely make women appear larger than they are. That being said, I'm in no shape to wear any of the options right now - but I've falled in love with many a laser-cut dress in my past.
