(In my head, this post title is to be read to the tune of that 80s Olivia Newton-John classic, "Let's get JUDG-men-tal, JUDG-men-tal . . ." If that tremendous ditty is now stuck in your head, uh, you're welcome!)
*Yes, I had such a past, and yes, a friend has put on a Fashion Fatwah on me if I get within 50 feet of a pair again.
The more preptastic amongst you may be shaking your heads in dismay at this, but even at my mistress du Alex P. Keaton peak, the traditional headband look was simply never my thing. And yet, this modern version, as ushered by Blair Waldorf and her faux UES crew, has caught my attention.
I'm starting to second-guess myself - a rare occurrence here at the Pretty, as longtime readers know - and find myself in need of a vote. What do we think, darlings - can this incarnation of the headband** be adult-appropriate, or am I teetering perilously close to romper territory?

**And not this twee over-the-forehead one, which, mostly to its association with She Who Shall Not Be Named, I won't acknowledge here.

"Feather Headband" ($7.99): Too much flair for me, but I think this look could be darling on the right woman. Problem is, as "Project Runway" fans will recall, a similar look was sported by favorite-contestant-turned-whiny hussy Kenley who mocked Fantasy GBFF Tim Gunn. I'm sure you can understand why I'm struggling here.
I'm also sure the crafty types amongst you could fashion something like this yourselves. For those like me, where the presence of a glue gun is likely indicative of criminal, not crafty, activity, I'll always feature the store-bought version.
Flower Double Headband ($7.99): Like the oragami style of this flower & the color, but is it too bow- (as opposed to Bo-) like?
Double Headband ($7.99): Now this, this I might be able to work. The double-strap is a new take on things, and this is simple & clean enough to please this Southern California girl.
Jurors, it's time for your verdict - am I guilty of watching too much CW? Or is this trend worthy of consideration by this thirty-one year old?

Hmm... I'm sure you can pull it off at your ripe old age lol with the right shoes of course. Just be careful it's a fine line indeed and can fall easily into the teen category. I say go for it. Have fun.
I had the exact same conversation last week with a friend over sushi. Namely that I just can't see myself with a head band that has anything fastened to it - blame it on age, conservatism, a law degree, whatever.
too much flair for me too. AND I can still remember the headaches with indentations in my head from headbands in the '80's... never again... NEVER AGAIN
These headbands are so cute!

I rock the headbands - even the feather ones - from time to time. It has to be done tastefully, though, with minimal other jewelry/accessories so as to not have too much flair. And I will totally admit it is in part (read: completely) due to Blair Waldorf. {OMG am I 17 again?!? Ah!}
I adore the Double Headband... and I think they are a fabulous addition to a boring ponytail kind of day... I'm just sayin.
I like the double headband a lot. I say give it a try.
I like the double headband...I think in general, as long as it's not all cutesy or have a big bow on it, you're safe!
I rock the headband - Hubs makes fun of me but I love them! I just make sure to wear them with something non-preppy so as to decrease the tennis-mom factor
I love the double-- I think it's quickly becoming a new classic and you could pull that off easily. I bought one from JCREW with a bow on the side and have yet to wear it. I can't channel enough Blair to pull that off.
Everyday - not so much. Love the feathers for evening. Pushing hard to add it to the bridesmaid ensemble for an upcoming wedding.
I love the double headband!! But I am also having a hard time with these ones with bows and feathers and whatever else they are putting on them. I'm almost 28 and scared that I will look like I'm trying to become Blair Waldorf by rocking these...
Let us know what your verdict is! :)
I like them, but I'd probably have to put in the feather or flowered headband and then pretend I didn't have that thing up there so I could just imagine those who are whispering around me are talking about how stylish and hot I looked and not going on about how I probably shouldn't be doing things in my hair like that. Trust me, I work with some catty people.
I would definitely wear the double headband, but I'd wait for it to go on clearance at Target because that's when I stock up on my headbands or wraps. And my green nail polish, which, in retrospect, may have been a bad purchase choice, but no one mocks green fingernails like they do a peackock feather on your head. Catty coworkers...sigh...
Headbands and I are not friends. As a member of the short hair brigade, I cannot pull off any more than a thin elastic running band.
However, I do own a few simple headbands should I ever actually grow my hair out. I have found the cheapies from Target to be the best. I have a medium size red one. It was $2.00.
Bow headbands? Notsomuch.
Headbands are not trends to me. I have worn them all my life. I am very picky though. I do like the simple double one you posted but the color is a little bright for me. If you want to ease into the headbands I would definitely check out J.Crew's selection. They have tortoise and leopord print skinny ones that are AMAZING. they are subtle, very comfortable, and versatile. If you are feeling braver the Burberry quilted headbands are great. Those are my go to. The only Nova Check items I will purchase.
I love headbands, especially since I am trying to grow out my bangs! Maybe start with some simple tortise shell types and work your way up to bows and feathers.
Yay for blogger fix!
I love simple headbands (like the double blue one you posted). In fact, I'm wearing one at work right now (black satin). I have not worked my way to to feathers and what not.
I say yes. The right headband can look remarkably polished. Maybe a black grosgrain, for instance...
I like the double headband!
You know something, I am all for headbands. I think there is a very special type of woman that can rock a headband with flowers/feathers/other bling on it...this woman though...not so much! :)
i love me some blair waldorf (how hilarious is her name btw?) and think a head band can be super cute. i especially love anything with peacock feathers.
Oh lovely headbands! Gorgeous :) XO
I love them. I would like to think that us 30 year olds aren't at the point where we to start acting our age. Ah ha
I just stumbled over from Life of a Busy Wife, and I love your blog. I like the way you write (er, type).
I like the last headband best. I'm not one for the headband trend myself, but I don't think you should shy away because of your (young) age. ;-)
I love headbands and I have like 20 of them. I love them with bows and feathers. Sometimes I even wear them with a ponytail. :) Good luck, I'm sure you would look pretty in them as well!
I personally love it. I just purchased a pretty low-key flower headband with a black flower from j.crew. A little pricey, but it really is the perfect amount of flair and the flower isn't too big.
One of my favorite Dallas housewives-- who is 36-- wears adorable flower headbands from Anthro and J.Crew all the time and always looks so pretty. I say go for it.
You know Miss Pretty, you are far younger than we, and therefore possessed of far hipper (Prettier) taste and talents, so we trust your good judgment, as well as the advice of everyone visiting the Pretty PLanet today.
We have several, although we do no bows, nay-nay, not at our advanced age. A bow headband on someone pushing a walker? We think not. (Kidding, just kidding.)
Fun post!
tp
the feather one is adorable, i'm sure you could pull it off! isn't target the perfect store? so glad i found your blog, cant wait to catch up :)
I'm absolutely enamored of the double headband at the end, especially the shade of greeny-bluey with your blond locks. Do it!!
Even Audrey Hepburn could pull off a babushka-esque, hippy handkerchief headband once in a while (pair with black cigarette pants and black, 3/4 sleeve boat neck top, of course). I think the trick is for everything else to be a muted monotone, then you can have a piece that is a bit more flamboyant then our waspish selves usually tolerate.
I can't lie...I am loving the feather headband! I just think it's so cute and a little different. I actually went and tried on that same headband last week, but I didn't end up coughing up the $7.99. Because I'm cheap like that. Until I see a $150 dress from Anthropologie that I MUST HAVE IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE CLEARLY NONE OF THE OTHER DRESSES IN MY CLOSET WOULD BE PERFECT ENOUGH FOR MY COUSIN'S WEDDING. *cough* Oh, I'm sorry. Did I say that out loud? Just recovering from some early morning online shopping.
I've been having the SAME headband dilemma. Here's what I've decided. If it's simple and sophisticated - ala the last one in your round-up - it's OK for me to wear. Anything else is just too over the top and belongs on those who are still in rompers.
I have to admit, I've always been a huge fan of headbands. But I believe I have an abnormally large misshaped head (with a bump behind ear), because they never last more than a few hours at a time. I have to take them off to get a break and then my hair looks like crap. Of course, I own a bunch of them regardless - I always have high hopes.
I'm all for the simple headbands and will rock them on occasion, however, not a fan of the feathered, bejewled, metallic sort. I personally cannot pull that off.
I think headbands are great-no matter how old you are! They are a quick, easy way to keep hair out of your face or spice up your look in a hurry. Go for it!
