Prettier Than Everyone Else, Mascara Ed. (#3,472,897)

Some people have a Napoleon's complex.

Some people solve complex equations.

I, as longtime readers know, have an eyelash complex.

That's right - you all can go on obsessing about the size of your intellect, or your chesticles, or run about solving actually important global issues - but I will be right here, scheming how to furtively switch the Anonymous Husband's lush, long eyelashes* for my own scrawny set without his noticing.
*Dear God:  Really, incredible lashes on a man?  Just a thought.  xo, LBM

The Product:  Imagine my delight, then, when I popped into my friendly neighborhood Sephora this weekend and received the following goody in my "Beauty Insider"** check-out bag:
**I'm afraid that this sounds like product placement - it isn't.  I will always tell you if someone has asked me to review or plug something.  Pinky swear.

Wildly intrigued with this wonderfully named "BADgal Lash" mascara, I immediately sped home in the Trophy Wife Wagon to investigate.  I eagerly anticipated the most lush, illicitly tempting lashes, the likes of which would instantly entice men to do my bidding or, more importantly, my laundry.

However, after a few go-rounds with the product, I propose the following re-name:

- SLIGHTLY-MISCHIEVOUS-gal Lash or
-  REMEMBER-THAT-ONE-TIME-I-ALMOST-GOT-TIPSY-ON-SMIRNOFF-ICE-gal Lash

. . . because "bad" in the "outrageously good results" sense, this isn't, but it is pretty decent.  Gold stars to the applicator wand, which wouldn't clump despite my enthusiastic attempts - just picture Grace Kelly leaping around her boudoir, frantically gauging at her eye with a mascara wand, and you'll get the picture.  It also held with no visible flaking throughout a work day.  It just didn't have that extra volume or length oomph which those of us who are languid of lash require.

The Bottom Line:  solid purchase for those who already have decent lashes & are sensitive about clumping;  for you, this is a good, everyday mascara buy on the high ($19) cosmetics end.  Sadly, for those of us driven to coveting our husband's lashes, just go on and invest in DiorShow already.  Because what price a lash complex?

The only thing that has EVER worked wonders for my lashes is my current 2-Step Program:

(1) Maybelline Great Lash "Blackest Black" Mascara - apply 2 thin coats to each eye.

(2) Apply 1 coat of Rimmel Lash Maxx (in Black) over the Great Lash - the crazy pink applicator brush does a mini-miracle.

Yes, I look like a freak at the gym doing my makeup with 3 applications of 2 different products, but we are not all blessed with Mink-Like Lashes a la Millitini (for serious, that girl's lashes are REDONK!).

I too got my Beauty Insider mascara sample... I was all meh about it. I was not that impressed.

I currently use Maybelline Lash Exact followed by L'Oreal Voluminous mascara.... and my lashes FINALLY pop!

I personally love BADGal but I do have long lashes. To me it is almost identical to DiorShow. If you want more length you could try swiping Fiber Wig on the ends. Do one good coat of DiorShow or BADGal and then tap the ends with Fiber Wig. It's looks great. Anna Sui had a lengthening mascara that had fiber in it (similar to the Fiber Wig) and it was out of this world! I used up my wand so I don't know the name but if you want length, that was the best I've seen.

p.s. The BADGal eyeliner is superb as well. Only black eyeliner I own!

Have gone down the Bad Gal lash road...(am easily suckered by Benefit's clever names.) But, every time I wore it I felt I was making the walk of shame.
Currently addicted to Bourjois Coup de Theatre False Lash Illusion...

I had problems with BadGal clumping so I switched to Cargo's Texas Lash. It smells like paint thinner, but I LOVES my volume. However, Sephora never has it so I may have to break down and get DiorShow.

Cargo must get some kickback from Dior for having their stuff constantly out of stock!

I seriously hope I live long enough to find a mascara that lives up to the promises it makes and doesn't require the covert application of false eyelashes to get the crazy sexy "Maybe she's born with it" look alluded to in the ads.

Come on - I thought after 40 years of mascara research - oh wait, 25 years of mascara resarch that I had finally found a match in Double Extend Lash Extension Effect Mascara. It does amazing things for my lashes with NO clumps...but recently the two-step application process has been too time consuming.

So I'll end up trying this, I'm sure!

Don't all the make-up artist use the pink and green one? Maybelline maybe?

these comments are the best, and making me want to spend my entire meager clerk's earnings on mascara. and i don't even mind my clumpy lashes. but maybe i should be scrutinizing them more. but i have more issues on my face, like the fact it looks like i have 16 year olds skin.

Good to know! This is the kind of PSA we need more often. Mascara is such a mine field.

Lancome Definicils, black not waterproof, with the curved (not straight!) brush. Magic. And doesn't flake during the day as every other brand does on me. super long lashes!

This is so much fun to read. I have eh lashes. I like Great Lash but latly I've been a fan of Cover Girl Volume exact in very black. I only use waterproof because I have allergies and always end up rubbing my eyes. Does a nice job for me.

I struggle with this, too. My bottom lashes are crazy long... what good is that going to do me?

I like Kate's tip-- I may try her method.

I currently use two Dior types (of course Dior Show...and their new one of which the name is escaping me). New mascara on first to get them long and no clumpy, then, let that dry, finish off with 2 (ahem 3) coats of DiorShow. Insane and expensive? Yes. Do I feel like it works? Yes. Does it really? We'll never know... I'm with you--long eyelashes on a man--not fair!

Okay Mel, I'm going to tread lightly here, because I know it's touchy, but I think you and I might be in the same lash camp, which is to say, we are majorly lacking. I've tried every curler and mascara under the sun, and have come to this conclusion: I do not have long, lush eyelashes, and I never will. Sigh...

Now sure, I still pay up for mascara (Diorshow) and use the appropriate curler (Shu, of course), but unless I get lash extensions, my lashes simply aren't going to look as pretty as someone born with great lashes using whatever mascara was on clearance at Walgreen's that day. So instead of obsessing, I wander through the skin care aisles at Sephora or ponder other cosmetics instead. I might cede lashes to the other girls, but I'm hanging on tight to the rest. Giving up the hope of glam lashes kinda feels freeing, I have to say... :-)

Dude, eye lashes? Ain't all they are cracked up to be...on the serious. I have some very long ones, if I do say so myself (just ask Kate--the makeup person at her wedding was like WTF you eyelash freak!?!?!?!)...so anywho...things get caught in them and forget about it if you so much as shed ONE tear...they can become a hot mess fast. Hahaha...anywhoo...you crack me up with your "Trophy Wife Wagon"...can we convince you to come to Dallas the next time we come to town? I think you would fit in just perfect with Paco and the gang :-)

I've been on a quest for the perfect mascara for a year and a half now. I've even tried DiorShow, and really wasn't thrilled with that either - and was pretty expensive. I was blessed with naturally long eyelashes, I'm just looking for volume. But, thanks for the tips!

Mojito Maven said...

my eyelashes stick straight out, not up, not curled...out. and they are ugly. and because they stick straight out, i can't ever get them in one of those curlers properly so i end up looking like a lash freak. most of the time i go sans mascara because of this.

Hilarious, as usual...my favorite mascara went MIA a couple years ago and I've been struggling every since.

so there is this fake lash application at salons, very big in asia now, that stay on for 4-6 weeks. it's like hair extensions. they use super long-last glue and add the lashes individually. once they start coming off, they come off one by one so a gradual transition back to reality, or you can get just it done again.

it's not blinded anyone i know yet, and cost about $35 in Hong Kong...is it worth the $1000+ ticket? this must have hit stateside, no?

Um, please don't judge me for actually getting tipsy off 2 Smirnoff Ice (Lights).

I'm now going to hang my head and sit in a corner.

I just purchased Latisse at my dermatologist's office, so as soon as it comes in I will start posting my long lash journey. She uses it, and yes after 3 months her lashes look like little minks. Bad Gal lash smears and runs on me, I end up looking like skanky gal when I wear it.

I bought the Maybelliene Stilleto mascara not because I needed a new one and not because I thought it would work... Just because I loved the marketing campaign and I thought it couldn't hurt to have another mascara...

My review would be similar to this BADgirl.. It seperates nicely and lengthens, but my eyelashes are not any thicker. I hear if you put baby powder on your lashes in between strokes it really thickens them up.

You need to find some eyedrops for glaucoma and run them along your eyelid above the lash line. When I worked on glaucoma patients I was amazed at how long the medication made their lashes... what an awesome side effect!

Sarah said...

I myself love BADgal, though I do have thick, long lashes to begin with. There is a prescription medication that will thicken and lengthen your lashes. The name is escaping me at the moment though...I'll look tomorrow when I go to work.

I'll have to pick it up next time I visit Sephora as my freebie...but you're right, Dior is the best! I've just found that it tends to dry out quicker than others. Maybe it's because I carry mine around with me all the time and it's in all kinds of temps...one can never be without long lashes and mine tend to deflate after about 4 hours...

Sarah said...

Oh its called Latisse by the way.

I am with you on this - I tried it expecting great results and I was dissapointed.
